Invasive Plants Steward
The land trust has created a new stewardship position, 100% focused on invasives across all preserves. This is an actual hands-on role (pulling up invasives) as well as a resource to help individual stewards accomplish their goals. Lois Tolley has agreed to take on this new role. Lois is passionate about getting rid of invasives and has already worked with other stewards to address specific problem areas.
The Invasive Plant Steward will work individually and with other stewards across all ELT Preserves to identify and manage invasive plant species, will lead volunteer events to address specific areas and plants throughout the year, and will also function as the go to expert for best practices in consultation with our Scientific Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) members and additional outside training resources. The steward will create an inventory of invasive plants and locations across all of the land trust preserves and prioritize problem areas which will serve as a basis for resource and volunteer allocation decisions.
Invasive Plants Guide
This Invasive Plants in Your Backyard guide was developed to help landowners identify and control non-native invasive plants in their yards. Invasive plants thrive outside their natural range, threatening the health of our native plant and animal communities. The guide is published by the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the sound use and management of natural resources through technical assistance and education.
